Programme Note
This piece is the final piece in a series of five I composed in 2025–26 based on images from the Japanese poetry anthology Shin Kokinshū (compiled 1205). Unlike the other four works in this series, this piece has an oral score – no written score exists. The oral score was developed through joint deep listening, dialogue, and workshopping over eighteen months with the koto player Miyama McQueen-Tokita.

The piece’s title shigarami kakete is an image of a flowing river – or, by analogy, flowing tears – being held back from their natural course. It comes from two poems: poem 328 by Ōe no Masafusa (1041–1111) and poem 1120 by Nijōin no Sanuki (c.1141–1217). The titular phrase is used in two of the latter poem’s three honka (intertextual references to earlier, highly respected works): Shūishū 876 by Ki no Tsurayuki (872–945) and in the ‘Tenarai’ chapter of Murasaki Shikibu’s (fl. early 11th century) Tale of Genji.
