Programme Note
This is the fifth in a projected series of 12 Fugues that I plan to write over my life, roughly one fugue every four years beginning in 2002. They are like entries in a stylistic journal, snapshots of my musical preoccupations. By re-imagining the fugal form each time, I crystallise my musical thinking down to its most technical, leaving poeticism to one side and allowing myself to abstract. Writing these pieces allows me to focus on pure form, within a broad conception of what a ‘fugue’ might be.
Fugue in E has nine voices, with a simple subject of two notes in a short–long rhythmic pattern. Each phrase is approximately the same length, and with each phrase the number of repetitions of the two-note subject increases (or, later in the piece, decreases). Taken as a whole, the nine voices combine to trace an arch form.
This piece was commissioned by and dedicated to the late pianist Satoh Yusuke, who premiered two previous fugues: C# (2007) and A (2014). The premiere performance in Tokyo in 2026 was given by Satoh’s friend Yasaka Kimihiro.

解説
本作は、私が生涯を通じて永く書き続けたいと希っているフーガ・シリーズ（全12作）の第5作目にあたる作品である。フーガは自身の音楽的様式を書き付けておく日誌の書き込み、或いはその時々の音楽的没頭の一断面といったところか。フーガを書く時に私はいつも考える、私にとってフーガとは何かということを、そしてどうすれば自分の音楽的方法論をフーガという形式に実現できるか、ということを。ロマンティシズムを脇へ除けて、音楽的思考を専ら技術的な問題に昇華させてゆく。それこそが私自身を抽象することを可能にするのだ。
《フーガ（ホ）》は9声部で構成され、短音符と長音符のリズムパターンからなる2音の簡素な主唱をもつ。各楽句の長さはほぼ均等で、楽句を重ねるごとに2音の主唱の反復回数は増加（あるいは曲の後半では減少）する。全体として9声部が組み合わさり、アーチ形式を描く。
