Programme Note
This is the first in a long-term series of fugues for solo piano I plan to write, about once every three-four years. They are like entries in a stylistic journal, snapshots of my musical preoccupations. By re-imagining the fugal form each time, I crystallise my musical thinking down to its most technical, leaving poeticism to one side and allowing myself to abstract. Writing these pieces allows me to focus on pure form, within a broad conception of the idea of fugue.
Fugue in f is the genesis of the overall project, and stems from my 3rd-year undergraduate counterpoint studies. It is the most traditional in its fugal form of the entire series (at least thus far).
