Programme Note
This piece, seven haiku for tenor and piano, was a study in slow, beautiful, wintery music, directly inspired by my initial thoughts of what constitutes a ‘Canadian’ response to winter. At the time I was attempting to analyse the music of several prominent Canadian composers who had written music about winter, trying to find out if they had any common elements; I found that there seemed to be a common treatment of the season among the pieces, one that treated winter as a positive phenomenon, though one to be appreciated at a distance (most of the music was beautiful, delicate and quiet). I wrote this piece, both the words and the music, over three days in November 2003 while attending that year’s Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival, and can also be seen as a direct response to the many contemporary composers featured that year who used what I felt were too many notes!
