Programme Note
It Could All End in Tears was written in 2004 as part of COMA’s ‘Four Temperaments’ project, and primarily focuses on the choleric temperament. It is loud, insistent, confident, and optimistically sure of itself. The improvised solos give the players opportunities to explore other aspects of the choleric temperament – the quirky, the spiritual, the argumentative. However, there is a twist in the Coda, where the piece becomes very slow and meditative, moving towards a more melancholic feel. This Coda (which is more reflective of my personal temperament) makes sense of the bluster and energy of the main music (and also explains the title…).
