Programme Note
When I first saw El Greco’s painting Saint Sebastian in the National Gallery in London in February 2004, I was struck by his portrayal of the saint’s brutal martyrdom, but especially by the aura of rapture that I felt surrounded the work. The painting asks us to venerate a man whose faith led him to blissfully accept his own martyrdom, to happily die for his god.
