Programme Note
elephants is a piece about cognitive dissonance, about the difference between ideology and reality. The text, by the composer, is a provocative series of 8 inter-related stanzas, expressing a certain type of militantly atheist/leftist viewpoint. It is inspired in part by Communist poetry from the 1920s and on actual revolutionary propaganda from currently operating Maoist/Marxist military factions, such as the FARC in Columbia. The music, however, is for the most part reflective, calm, considerate; the choir is not necessarily expressing the militant views of the text, but considering them, word by word—sometimes syllable by syllable. The intended effect is one of confusion, a beautiful chaos, as extreme words are lost among the collision of voices and the final result is not a conclusion, not a synthesis, but an affirmation of the beauty of discussion and dissent and disagreement.
