Programme Note
resisting fortune was written in the autumn and winter of 2007-08 while I was living in Tokyo and feeling overwhelmed by the size, noise and history of my new surroundings. In light of trying to make sense of the new city and new language I had hoped for so long to experience, I choose to compose resisting fortune as a meditation on the struggle against self-imposed systems. The musical systems I employed in the piece were restrictive, but allowed enough freedom for expression and inspiration to weave themselves around the pre-set frame. The title is inspired by the twenty-fifth chapter of Machiavelli’s The Prince, which is about using times of good fortune to prepare for resisting the inevitable times of ill fortune.
