Programme Note
Hypatia is a meditation on the subject of mathematics and its relationship to music, a topic that has always been close to my heart. The piece is named after the first great female mathematician, who died at the hands of a Christian mob in Alexandria. Her story has been used for the past two centuries as a graphic illustration of the intolerance of the faithful towards science and reason, but my choice to name this piece after her owes as much due to her role as one of the primary ancient interpreters and transmitters of Euclidian Geometry as it does to her infamous and evocative death. This work is constructed around simple ratios derived from Euclid’s descriptions of the Platonic solids, ratios which are used both in the overall rhythmic structure as well as the harmony. I wrote this piece as an interpretation of Euclid, a musical expression of his axioms, and in honour of a woman who devoted her life to spreading that knowledge to the world.
