Programme Note
and there shall come sets fragments of five famous verses from Isaiah (11.1,2,6 and 15.1,2). These verses express hope for the future Messiah. My setting is contemplative, liberally laced with silences and pauses, points of consideration. The piece is divided into three main sections. In the first, the sopranos and altos have a different fundamental pitch from the tenors and basses. In the second, they share each others’ fundamental pitches. In the final section, these two fundamental pitches are used to abstract a harmonisation of the famous advent hymn Veni veni, Emmanuel, which in turn becomes the basis of the final minutes of the piece. Thus, the harmonic story of the piece is one of coming together and becoming One, an illustration of the texts, which promise a coming together of predator and prey in paradisiacal peace.
