Programme Note
Descants is a series of pieces for solo instruments in natural environments. ‘Natural’, in my meaning, includes human- made environments, eschewing any artificial distinction between humans and the rest of the environment. The composed music is intended to become a part of the natural soundscape, not foregrounded or separated from the natural sounds around it.
Descants 1 consists of twelve short pieces for shō and u. It is structured around the pre-modern Japanese way of counting hours, in which the day was divided up into six equal daylight hours and six equal nighttime hours, each named for an animal from the Chinese zodiac. The length of each ‘hour’ would, naturally, be slightly different every day, and the daylight and nighttime hours would only be the same length on equinoxes. In Descants 1, each movement is played at the start of each hour, a complete performance taking 24 hours.

『デスカント』は自然環境の中で奏される、ソロ奏者のため の作品シリーズである。「自然」という語について、この場 では、人為-非人為という区別を避け、人工の環境をも含む こととする。音楽自体が前景化されず、また自然のサウンド スケープから分かたれず、むしろ作曲された音楽自体が自然 の音響の一部になることを企図している。
笙と竽のための「デスカント 第1番」は12曲からなり、平安 期の時法に基づいて構成されている。そこには6等分された 昼の時間、同じく6等分された夜の時間とがあり、それぞれ に十二支の名が与えられている。当然ながら各刻の⻑さは日 毎に僅かずつ変化するが、昼夜平分時(つまり春分と秋分) の日に限り、昼夜の⻑さが一致する。「デスカント 第1番」 の各楽章(全12楽章)は、楽章名に対応する「刻」に合わせ て演奏が始められる。従って完演には24時間を要する。
