Concept

Gotō (archipelago): a soundscape, video, and piano work set in Goto City, Nagasaki Prefecture, performed by Kimihiro Yasaka, a Japanese pianist currently residing in Montreal, Canada, and Daryl Jamieson, a Canadian composer based in Japan.

Goto is a picturesque location, designated as a World Heritage Site, where unique local culture persists. It boasts a long history dating back to Jōmon period ruins and is also known as the departure point for the Japanese missions to Tang China, including Kūkai. Beyond the distinctive natural sounds of the Gotō Islands, the region holds particular musical intrigue, notably the hidden Christians' 'Orasho' chants. This concert marks the Tokyo premiere of the immersive work Gotō (Archipelago) for piano, audio and video, created using sound and visual recordings gathered over a year in Gotō.
